Is it your belief that Elvis Costello isn’t cool?

I saw my first Grammy ceremony on Sunday.

Well, it was playing in the background at work after the local news. I didn’t notice the TV was on until Taylor Swift sang and blood started pooling on each of my shoulders.

Then she won a bunch of awards for singing. She even recorded the best album of the year, I’m told.

Here are some thoughts on Zamfir, master of the pan flute.

Elvis Costello is terrific, as long as you can pretend his verse on Jenny Lewis’s “Carpetbaggers” doesn’t exist. If Taylor Swift makes your ears bleed, don’t go near that song without a bucket.

Out-of-tune is OK if there’s some soul or story to hear.

It’s more hearing a not-great singer scrape against the upper edge of his range.

Elvis Costello may not be a “great” singer in the sense of someone who has had extensive training, but he is certainly both expressive and tuneful. His voice has much of the same timbre of a cello, and if you listen to “The Juliet Letters” it merges well with the Brodsky Quartet.

He also wins major points in my book for being part of that extremely creative and fertile “new wave” Class of ‘77 along with Nick Lowe, Joe Jackson, and Difford & Tilbrook of Squeeze.

I also want to be executive producer of a Beyonce album so I can cut out the ballads.

I couldn’t watch the Sports Night clip from work. I think more shows need Kim. Not just the actress, but that character.

This hit so many of my geek buttons, it’s unreal. I have to go be alone, now.
